Avro Lancaster Mk 1 ser no PD397, c/s AS-V took off from RAF Kirmington (now Humberside Airport) at 14:50 on a daylight raid on Cologne. Believed hit by flak,.exploded in mid air.
Tail gunner Sgt R.E.McCann badly injured, survived.
