Leonard Reuben Ayres was born in 1917 (Newmarket Q3-1917 3B:656), son of Reuben Charles and Mabel Eliza AYRES (née BRADFORD) of Lode

In the 1939 register, at Mill Road, Lode were his father [1-1-1883] widower, farm worker; aunt ? Marjorie A [8-10-1874](later BADCOCK) and his sister Oliver M [1-4-1920] later NICHOLLS.


Avro Lancaster Mk 1 ser no PD397, c/s AS-V took off from RAF Kirmington (now Humberside Airport) at 14:50 on a daylight raid on Cologne. Believed hit by flak,.exploded in mid air. Tail gunner Sgt R.E.McCann badly injured, survived.
Crew were:- F/Lt John Barrass, RAFVR, Pilot; Sgt Sydney Marshall, RAF, Flight Engineer; F/Sgt Desmond O'Halloran, RAAF, Air bomber; W/O Ronald Dowe, RAAF, Navigator; Sgt Leonard Ayres, RAFVR, Wop/Ag; Sgt Ronald Bolt,RAFVR, Mid Upper Gunner; Sgt R McCann, RAF, tail gunner.
